Abstract: Since its inception in 1980 as Applied Molecular Genetics Incorporated, Amgen's growth to become the world's largest biotechnology company with sales of $12.4 billion in 2005 has been phenomenal. Through its innovations, acquisition of companies like Immunex and other operational strategies, Amgen has avoided the dual menace of sluggish growth and stiff competition that has hit many pharmaceutical and biotechnological behemoths.
